Board

PRESIDENT:
Susan Donovan
is a founding member of the East Bay affiliate of Habitat for Humanity and has served on the Board since its inception. Susan has been teaching in Bristol for over 30 years. Last year she was named the Bristol Warren School District Teacher of the Year. She has also been named Rhode Island Physical Education Teacher of the Year twice in her career. She is a board member and secretary for Save Bristol Harbor, the education coordinator for the Bristol Art Museum and an advisor to the Board for the Kickimuit Education Foundation. Susan is a communicant of Saint Michael’s Church in Bristol where she is a member of the choir, a past member of the church vestry and recent search committee. She is the mother of three adult children and resides with her husband Glenn in Bristol.

VICE PRESIDENT:
Karen Vebber joined the Habitat for Humanity East Bay Chapter Board of Directors in October of 2008. Karen is a Mortgage Originator for People’s Credit Union. Karen brings our organization over 20 years of financial services and marketing experience. She lives in Portsmouth with her husband Paul and their children David and Megan.

TREASURER:
Joe Hearn has been a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity for over ten years. He has volunteered in several US states and traveled with Habitat to Africa, Southeast Asia and South America. A board member since 2007, Joe lives in Newport and is the President of Rhode Island based Advanced Remarketing Services, Inc.

SECRETARY:
Turner C. Scott, J.D. is a local attorney with 30 years experience concentrating in real estate and municipal law. He has contributed extensive services pro bono on the McAllister Street property before joining the Habitat Board in 2009. He is a retired National Guard Colonel with substantial military experience in administrative law. Presently he is the assistant Middletown town solicitor and a past Newport solicitor. He resides in Newport with his wife, Kathy, and daughters, Logan and Julia.

Dani Braun joined the Habitat for Humanity East Bay Chapter Board of Directors in October of 2008. A Senior Recruiter, Dani has a background in Linguistics and Technology Staffing, is also a board member of the Middletown Education Collaborative. She is actively involved in the Aquidneck Island Child and Family Services’ Visiting Resource and Foster Parent programs, which provide mentoring and safe haven for children on Aquidneck Island. She lives in Middletown with her husband Richard and two small children, Mia and Maxime.

Terrence Gavan, CPA, CFP has over thirty-five years of varied experience in Finance and Accounting. After a stint in the Peace Corps, he attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where he earned a Master of Science in Accounting. Mr. Gavan started his professional career at the Boston office of Coopers and Lybrand, one of the “Big-Four” accounting firms. In the 1980s, Mr. Gavan started a teaching career at Salve Regina University in Newport, Rhode Island, and for fifteen years, taught Taxation, Accounting and Finance. While at Salve, Terrence rose to Associate Professor, Department Chair and President of the Faculty. After leaving Salve, he developed an Accounting and Finance office in the Newport area. Currently he is a practicing CPA, Financial Planner and Registered Investment Advisor. Mr. Gavan has published several history and touring books on the Newport area.

Spencer McCombe AIA, had worked for 4 years in the Milwaukee area prior to his past 12 years in Rhode Island. He started Cordtsen Design Architecture in 2009. A graduate of Roger Williams University with a Bachelor of Architecture degree, Mr. McCombe has been a Project Architect for many high profile projects. Some of these projects include: Christ Church, Carnegie Abbey Resort, The Brick Alley Pub, The Abaco Club, Bahamas, many private residences, multi-family housing, restaurants, retail and professional offices. His responsibilities include the full range of professional architectural services from the initial design sketch all the way through the coordination of the interiors specification.  He has had extensive experience in specific areas of the profession including: historic district commissions, zoning and planning boards, coast and flood zone buildings, historic tax credits, and energy efficient design.
